When is buying a puppy bad? Well in the past five years since getting involved in rescue, I'd say ALWAYS...unless they are in rescue. I understand for many that they want that purebred puppy, or think buying a puppy will allow them the 'perfect' dog. I'm not going to go into that 4 million dogs are EUTHANIZED each year at SHELTERS ALONE in this country due to this mentality...that'll be another entry.
So a couple of months ago the dark world of unethical and puppy mill breeders hit my radar HARD. There is an unethical puppy mill that has kept from being shut down for 15 years. Over that time, let's do some math...30 PLUS litters each year of MALAMUTES, which equals conservatively 300 plus puppies. These people sell these puppies for $1200-2500 each, using Twitter, EBay, Facebook and multiple websites that are PUPPY FINDING sites, which also claim that they do NOT CONDONE or SELL puppy mill pups...but of course they do, as ethical breeders seldom have litters without pups being sold ahead of time and generally seem to breed one or two litters annually.
Now back to this particular situation. They are not licensed by the U.S.D.A. This is suppose to be done so that these 'breeders' are held to some sort of standard to provide appropriate care. So that brings us to the condition of these animals and their living condition.
These people move around quite a bit....Colorado, Nevada, Kentucky and now Snowflake, Arizona. No taxes are filed by these individuals, nor is a legal business entity in place and there is good reason to believe the one person is not even in this country legally, but is making hundreds of thousands annually selling pups.
The last place these dogs were forced to live was at a property in which the lived in small enclosures, male/female in each. Living in feces, urine with the females kept pregnant from 6 months forward. Puppies were born continually, some live, many die...weaning was done at 4-6 weeks and puppies were shipped to 'buyers' around the country at that horribly young age. Puppies are not vetted it appears, but buyers are told they are and shown or given a 'kennel card' that was nothing more then the 'breeder' putting what she felt should be done with a pup. There is proof of the breeder actually using a health certificate of a vet that provided a certificate for one puppy and was/is making copies and filling them in with other puppy's information, making it appear the pup is healthy.
These pups are often sick, have congenital issues, a number of them have died. The 'breeder' argues with the buyer and always screams over them and takes NO RESPONSIBILITY for their horrible breeding practices. It seems the way they run this 'business' is through lies, deception and bullying and threats. Yet all along, they continue to breed and breed and breed.
When dogs get into fights, they don't care, if one wriths in pain or dies from injuries, they just continue to breed. Dogs are disposable and their only source of income and they have been making hundreds of thousands of dollars on the back of these MALAMUTES.
Puppies live in filth, they contract PARVO and other such diseases, they don't care, they ship them and sell them as HEALTHY.
Questionable is the registering of these dogs with the AKC...apparently AKC doesn't demand DNA testing of all breeding stock, so it seems that you just make up the parents and get puppies registered!
This is but ONE disgusting and horrible PUPPY MILL, but it is the one that hit my radar because they are MALAMUTES. These two individuals have multiple Facebook pages and they are so delusional they sing themselves accolades and in their sick and delusional minds, they feel they are the reason that the Malamute breed has survived, because of THEIR DOGS. The allege they breed GIANT Malamutes and they are CERTIFIED by the AKC, that they are GIANTS...but a Malamute is a Malamute, there is NOT a GIANT breed of Malamute, it's just people who call themselves breeders who breed for the 'bigger is better' concept...
So what can you do?
Report a known puppy mill, or suspected puppy mill to the U.S.D.A.
Contact authorities (Animal Control, Police, Board of Supervisors) (In the above case, none of these groups have done anything as in Navajo County Arizona, authorities do not much care for animals)
Make people AWARE and continue to make the public AWARE.
DO NOT BUY fROM A BREEDER THAT BREEDS MORE THAN A LITTER OR TWO ANNUALLY.
GO to the breeder's home/facility. If you are too far away have someone else that you personally know go and do a check.
Ask for REFERENCES, business and personal references.
Due your DUE DILIGENCE.
Better still ADOPT a Malamute in RESCUE...many of these puppy mill and unethical breeder dogs get dumped and are KILLED at shelters, but there are also many who are lucky enough to get into a rescue!
I don't understand why ANYONE would buy from a breeder that advertises on the INTERNET.....good LORD. I really GOOD breeder seldom needs to ADVERTISE available puppies.
ADOPT, FOSTER, DONATE to a RESCUE..
