I suspect I'll be rambling here ...but over the past 4 years, since my Mom passed away and I lost Tirawa, I've gotten involved with saving some Malamutes, Huskies and Jack Russells...breeds I know and have a network of people to assist.
I do not begrudge ethical breeders...never have...but I despise the backyard breeders and those idiots (yep, can't fix STUPID) who will NOT spay or neuter their dogs and then they breed.
Who reading this knows that 9000, yep that is right...9000 dogs are killed DAILY in shelters across the United States.....that is DAILY...that's something like 2.7 MILLION KILLED ANNUALLY. None of these dogs asked to be born...but they were...then for whatever reason their idiotic humans became tired of them and left them in the desert, the country, tied to a tree, dumped them on a road, abandoned them at the shelter...but they were DISPOSED OF.
So what happens is they are on short holds (legally) at the shelters and then they go on e-lists (that is euthanasia...DEATH). I have seen over 4 years rescues that come out of the woodwork and become 'rescues' and are nothing but scams...they make it tough for the ethical and GOOD rescues and those of us who have what I term a "VILLAGE" and work hard to save dogs (and yes cats).
In the shelters there are often times SENIOR dogs, who have been dumped for a new puppy...these break my heart the most...they are so difficult to adopt as people do not want to hold a dog two, three, six months after they save it as it dies...but these seniors have given years of unconditional love to their humans and for what...to end their life on a cement floor with the stench of death all around...I've rescued several seniors and held them in my arms as they died...I cried hard and they've all touched my heart...but they left this earth in the arms of someone who GAVE A DAMN.
Many folks think that dogs that end up in shelters are mutts...we are pulling purebreds continually...
It would be my wish that everyone pay it forward to a creature...can't you foster, transport, assess, adopt, donate? Many times a rescue needs a 24-72 hour foster to get a dog out of a shelter IMMEDIATELY to cheat death...can't you do that???
Rescuing is emotional, expensive and often times heartbreaking...but without it...well, I can't think like that.
